Basic Ballet Vocabulary

When I am teaching dance class I don't ALWAYS use proper ballet terminology, but I try to as much as I can. I think that as dance teachers we forget how much some of these words are just second nature to us, not realizing that our students could be lost.

So today we are providing a worksheet with basic ballet vocabulary that you could go over in class with your students. There is also a page included in our printable where students can write out the definition of each word. And, if you want to make it even more fun, we made a crossword puzzle with all 20 vocabulary words that your students can fill out!

Some students may need to see the words spelled out before they really stick. You could use this list of vocabulary as inspiration for your upcoming technique combos. Just try and include a few of the words and movements, and your students will start to catch on.

Taking the time as teachers to teach this basic vocabulary will benefit your students for years to come. Knowing the movement AND knowing what it is called is a great way to deepen our students knowledge and help them become proficient in the dance classroom.
