Today I am sharing one of my favorite dance class assignments: the Dance Concert Critique.
When I was teaching school I would require all of my students to go and see a live dance performance, and then write a concert critique. I realized after getting a few of these papers turned in, that my students needed a little extra support and direction in writing their report. So I came up with a few specific questions that they could answer, and I think the outcome was better for both of us.
A concert critique is a great assignment for students because it is something they can do outside of the dance classroom. After being in dance class students will also be able to appreciate all of the hours of work and effort it takes to create dances and perform on stage. Students can also connect concepts that they are working on and learning in class to the performance they see on stage.
One of the National Core Dance Standards requires students to RESPOND to work that they see. This concert critique form will ask them to respond to feelings they felt, elements of dance they saw, and how the lighting and costumes contributed to the performance.
I always asked my students to attach a program from the performance they saw. In this post-covid world many programs are electronic, but you could still have students submit the program by printing it out, or sending it electronically. (This was just one more way I could keep students accountable, and make sure they were not copying their friends work.)
I hope this helps you streamline your paperwork, and helps your students think critically. Enjoy!
