Hi dance friends! Hope all is going well for you as we get into the new year. Today we are bringing you one of our dance teaching ideas for the book "A Bad Case of Stripes" by David Shannon. In this book the main character Camilla is easily swayed by others opinions, and her physical appearance takes on those opinions.
When using this book in dance class, you would first read this book with your class, and have the students pay attention to how Camilla's appearance changes throughout the book. Then you will assign each group to one of the reactions that Camilla had to her surroundings. (In the lesson plan there are visuals that you can give each group to remind them how Camilla looked.)
Each group will then work on choreographing and dance that represents their reaction. We have also included a "Choreography Outline" that you can give to each group that will help them connect the ideas from their picture to their movement.
Then have the students present and PERFORM their work for the class. Allow the students to RESPOND to the dances they watched. Have students comment on how the elements the group chose either helped or hindered their groups ability to express their ideas.
We have more dance teaching ideas for this book (and 11 other books) in our unit on "Dance Teaching ideas for Children's Books" in our Shop. If you are interested you can click the button below:
Or you can get the idea and visuals we shared today sent straight to your inbox by filling out the form below this post. We hope this helps you cut down on your prep this month, and up-level the creativity in your classroom!
Keep Dancing!
