When dance students create choreography, they’re doing much more than arranging steps. They are making artistic choices, communicating ideas, and learning how movement can express thoughts and emotions. Because of this, one of the most valuable things we can offer our students during the choreography process is time to reflect and respond to their own work.
Reflection transforms choreography from a series of movements into a meaningful creative experience. When students pause to think about why they made certain choices, they begin to understand themselves as artists. They develop stronger creative voices, deeper confidence, and a clearer sense of intention in their dancing.
To help guide this process, I created a free printable Student Choreography Submission Worksheet. This simple tool helps students organize their ideas and reflect on the choreography they are preparing to present in a student choreography concert.
Why Reflection Matters in Student Choreography
Young choreographers often focus on learning steps or filling counts of music. While that’s part of the process, it’s equally important for them to think about the meaning behind their movement.
When students reflect on their choreography, they begin to:
Clarify their creative intentions
Recognize the emotions or themes in their work
Make stronger artistic choices
Communicate their ideas more confidently
Develop ownership of their choreography
Giving students space to think and respond to their own work also builds important life skills. Reflection encourages critical thinking, self-awareness, and confidence in decision making—skills that extend far beyond the dance studio.
A Tool to Guide the Reflection Process
The Student Choreography Submission Worksheet helps students slow down and thoughtfully consider the dance they are creating. Instead of rushing through the preparation process, they are invited to pause, organize their ideas, and articulate their artistic choices.
At the same time, the worksheet makes concert preparation smoother for teachers by gathering the key details for each piece in one place.
What Does the Worksheet Include?
The worksheet begins with a few basic details about the choreography:
Title Every dance deserves a name. Choosing a title encourages students to think about the overall idea or theme behind their piece.
Music Artist and Song Title Students identify the music they have chosen and consider whether it supports their choreography. If lyrics are included, they should be appropriate and align with the intention of the piece.
Duration and Counts Students prepare a minimum of 32 counts of movement and structure their choreography so it fits within the performance guidelines.
While these details are practical, they also encourage students to think intentionally about how their dance is organized.
Guiding Students Through Creative Reflection
The most meaningful part of the worksheet invites students to respond to reflection questions about their choreography.
Questions like:
What inspired your choreography?
What mood or feeling does your piece convey?
These prompts help students connect their movement to an idea, emotion, or story. When students can describe the intention behind their choreography, they often perform it with greater clarity and confidence.
Reflection also helps dancers recognize that choreography is a process of exploration and discovery, not just a final performance.
Encouraging Ownership and Responsibility
The worksheet also includes a commitment statement where students acknowledge that their choreography is original and prepared by them.
This section encourages responsibility by asking students to confirm they will come prepared for rehearsals, bring their notes and music, and be ready to teach their choreography if needed.
Establishing these expectations helps students take ownership of their work while fostering a respectful and productive rehearsal environment.
A Simple System for Dance Teachers
From a teaching perspective, this worksheet creates a more organized and efficient process for collecting choreography submissions.
Instead of receiving incomplete or unclear information, teachers get a consistent format that highlights each student’s creative thinking and intentions. This allows you to better support your dancers as they develop their pieces.
More importantly, it shifts the focus from simply performing choreography to thinking like a choreographer.
Supporting Young Artists
Student choreography concerts are a wonderful opportunity for dancers to share their creativity. By giving students time to reflect on their work, we help them move beyond memorizing steps and begin to see themselves as artists.
A small moment of reflection can lead to powerful growth in creativity, confidence, and self-expression.
If you’d like to support your students in this process, feel free to download and print the Student Choreography Submission Worksheet as they prepare their pieces.
Let the creativity flow—and remember, thoughtful choreography begins with thoughtful dancers.
Keep dancing, friends!
