St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect excuse to bring a little extra joy and creativity into your dance classroom. With its bright colors, playful spirit, and hint of magic, it’s a wonderful opportunity to get dancers moving in a way that feels festive and imaginative.
If you’re looking for a quick way to energize your students, the “Dance the Rainbow” warm-up is a simple activity that combines movement, creativity, and a splash of color. It’s easy to set up, highly engaging, and works beautifully for dancers of many ages.
Let’s walk through how it works!
Preparing Your Space
Before class begins, print the rainbow arrow markers and place them around the perimeter of your dance space.
Arrange them so dancers can travel across the room while following the colors of the rainbow. One side of the room includes:
Red
Yellow
Blue
Violet
The opposite side includes:
Orange
Green
Indigo
A simple layout map in the download helps you place everything quickly and clearly.
This colorful setup instantly transforms your space. As dancers walk into the room and spot the rainbow arrows waiting for them, curiosity and excitement naturally build.
Dancing Through the Rainbow
Once everyone has gathered, explain that each color of the rainbow has a movement word that begins with the same letter.
Here’s the rainbow action list:
Red — Reach
Orange — Open
Yellow — Yearn
Green — Give
Blue — Balance
Indigo — Inch
Violet — Vibrate
As dancers travel from arrow to arrow, they perform the movement connected to that color. For example, when they arrive at red, they explore ways to reach with their arms, legs, or whole body.
Encourage dancers to move across the space and let the colors guide their movement choices.
Encouraging Creative Movement
One of the best parts of this activity is how naturally it encourages creativity. Instead of demonstrating every movement, invite dancers to explore their own interpretation of each action word.
You might prompt them with questions like:
How many different ways can you reach?
Can you balance on different body parts?
What does it look like to vibrate through your whole body?
These simple prompts help dancers warm up their muscles while also warming up their imagination.
Try It Again… With a Twist
After dancing through the rainbow once, you can repeat the activity with a new challenge:
Move faster or slower
Travel on different levels
Dance with a partner
Change the pathway you take through the room
At the end, invite dancers to share which color felt the most exciting or which action was the most fun to explore. These quick reflections help build connection and classroom community.
Bringing a Little Magic to Class
St. Patrick’s Day is all about celebration, laughter, and a little bit of magic. The Dance the Rainbow warm-up brings those elements right into your dance class while also helping dancers build coordination, body awareness, and creative confidence.
So print the arrows, scatter a rainbow across your floor, and let your dancers move through the colors.
Who knows… you might even find a little pot of gold at the end of class. 🌈
Happy St. Patrick’s Day, friends!
